Monday 19 March 2007, Southbank Centre, Purcell Room, 7pm
John Kampfner, Editor of the New Statesman, makes a presentation on the unhelpful 'Culture of Spin' and how the manipulation of the media is dangerous at a time when issues such as the culture and identity of the nation is at stake. He also talks about the role and value of artists in making sure these complex issues are publicly aired.
The event is chaired by Baroness McIntosh of Hudnall.
Is there a "culture" of spin? Or just effective ways to get your policy points across, better than the opposition?
If Labour (apart from Iraq) is actually doing well (in its handling of the economy, for instance), isn't attacking it for "spin" just a bit lame? Is that the best critics of New Labour can manage?
I will be interesting to see what actual alternative the artists produce. If any.
